康利1948年出生于美国弗吉尼亚州,父母都是作家。康利从小耳濡目梁,从小学一年级便开始写作,并且从双亲那里吸取了不少宝贵的创作经验,为日后成为作家打下了良好基础。除此之外,康利的童年就像当时所有农庄的孩子一样平凡,她和兄弟姐妹们必须做许多家务——照顾动物、整理菜园等等,不过等他们把家务做完,就可以自由地钓鱼、玩耍,父母很少约束他们。
康利的父母也曾经是纽伯瑞儿童文学奖的金奖作家,康利的写作之路与他息息样关。她出版的第一《Crazy Lady! （Newbery Hornor）疯狂的女士（纽伯瑞银奖）》便是续写父亲未完成的遗作。《谁知我心》是康利出版的第三《Crazy Lady! （Newbery Hornor）疯狂的女士（纽伯瑞银奖）》,也是其独立完成的首部力作,出版次年即荣获纽伯瑞儿童文学银奖。
目前,康利全家居住在巴尔的摩,仍然笔耕不辍。
