作者简介
Michel Nedjar was born in 1947 and is undisputedly one of the most important living artists of the French Art Brut movement. The many facets of his work are comprehensively presented here for the first time. Puppets that fascinated him during his journeys to Mexico and Guatemala are the result of his first encounter with high magic, artisanship, the baroque and death. These puppets inspired him to make his first fetish figures from waste materials. These were later followed by drawings, rapidly completed, without corrections or regretful strokes.Nedjar’s material interventions and formal variations are endless and polyvalent. But his icons are constant and consist of a series of figures that are endlessly repeated: faces and masks, human bodies, mummies, stick puppets and silhouettes, as well as certain animals and birds.
The book is a tribute to the artist’s work and bears testimony to his importance to both Art Brut and contemporary art. Over 300 color illustrations document his artistic oeuvre and offer an insight into all his creative periods. Nedjar addresses all the key aspects of his life and work in an interview with Sylvia Kummer.
