作品简介

Haiqin Yu and Justin M. Thomas have documented the thoughts of some of Harvard’s greatest thinkers and most skilled practitioners, about the craft of teaching and the role of the university. Rather than fitting their own frame of reference over the thoughts of others, the editors have allowed the best of the best to speak for themselves.?You will find here reflections of the medical anthropologist Arthur Kleinman, who has devoted a lifetime to the deep moral understanding of Chinese society. You will find the empathetic thoughts of a young dean who helps Harvard students achieve their full potential, of a mature scientist who inspires Harvard students to devote their lives to preserving a habitable earth, and of many other men and women whose contributions, like so many brilliant mosaic tiles, together create a beautiful whole unlike any of its individually beautiful pieces…And you will also find the thoughtful reflections on both the theory and practice of holistic engineering education, by a genuine educational pioneer, founding President of Olin College Richard Miller.

Haiqin Yu is currently senior editor at the Journal of University of Jinan (Science and Technology) of the University of Jinan, Shandong Province, China. Dr. Yu’s research focuses on general education, engineering education, and reading and writing education. She attended Harvard Graduate School of Education as a visiting scholar during the 2014-2015 academic year. While there, she established the Fulcrum Team, with whom she conducted the Harvard interview series.

Justin M. Thomas earned a master’s degree in Regional Studies-East Asia from Harvard University in the spring of 2014. He met Dr. Yu in the fall of the same year and began to assist her with her interview project. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Chinese from Georgetown University in 2012. From 2015 to 2017, he served as a volunteer English teacher with the Peace Corps (known in China as the U.S.-China Friendship Volunteers) at Chongqing Technology and Business University.
