作品简介

本书原名《大学英文散文读本》,为西南联大办学期间“大二英文”课程的教材。“大二英文”是全校性的共同必修或选修课程(外文系和文、法学院某些系二年级学生必修,也供全校各系学生选修),其目的是为了进一步提高学生的现代英语阅读和写作能力。

本书原为美国大学英文原版教材,书中按照文体进行分类,涉及主题颇为广泛,其中选入的文学作品既有传世名篇,又有当代佳作。本书的编选理念对当下英文教学很有启示意义。

2017年,中译出版社推出《西南联大英文课》一书,为西南联大全校通开课“大一英文”课程的教材,受到广泛欢迎。应广大读者要求,现推出其姊妹篇《大二英文读本》,从中可略窥当年西南联大的英文教学水平。

富兰克林·威廉·斯各特(Franklin William Scott,1877—1950),美国伊利诺伊大学英文系教授(1912–1925),主要著作有《大学英文散文读本》《正式与非正式小品文》《伊利诺伊报纸和期刊(1814–1897)》《大学作文手册》《写作与口语手册》。

雅各布·谢特林(Jacob Zeitlin,1883—1937),美国伊利诺伊大学英文系教授(1916-1937),主要著作有《大学英文散文读本》《诗歌的种类》《十七世纪小品文:从培根到克拉伦登》《斯图尔特·谢尔曼的生平和信件》。
